rust colour soils and tide marked rocks, dyke swarms and seaweed spaghetti risotto, freshly caught mackerel and pollock, see-able-down-into-water and sunset swims, furling and unfurling, winching and winching tighter, feasting on blackberries on uninhabited islands and sharing practices in our warmly lit saloon

Kakamega Forest, Kenya

Plants for Life Indigenous Tree Reforesting, 2026

Within Kakamega county, one of the most densely populated rural areas of Kenya, lies Kenya’s only rainforest and the most eastern extension of the Congo forest. Three plots within the forest are being restored to their indigenous state. Invasive species such as Psidium guajava, Bischofia javanica and Eucalyptus have taken over parts of the forest. Guava saplings are extremely strong, almost impossible to remove by hand. After removal, larger trees have been repurposed as wooden fencing surrounding the plots to keep livestock from grazing in the forest (without power tools as they are forbidden within the conservation area). Home to over 33 species of snake, half of which are venomous, 360 species of birds and nearly 500 species of butterflies, the forest hums with life. It was amazing to visit the forest and help label some of the 2000 seedlings (of over 300 species) of native trees and shrubs which have been planted by Plants for Life, and their team of local forest workers. Thanks Mark, Cheryl and the team at Nurture in the Wild.

Daily visits from swans, herons, cormorants and geese. Low lying light finds colour amongst the deep purple Iris reticulata, the firey flowers of the Hamamelis and the red branches of dogwood. Bright white reflects off the snowdrop carpet onto the Himalayan birch, who turn a ghostly grey after the early sunset.

Indigo dyeing in the Balinese Jungle

Indonesia, assam indigo dyeing with Tian Taru, 2025

Threads submerged into a ground-held vat; dark liquid reflecting its surface and hiding its depth. Gentle movements, so as not to wake the Colour, but tempting it slowly from its resting place. Green shifts to blue as Air rushes inwards and clings to the fabric; an invisible character in the recipe. Blue, Blue and deeper still, tangles itself between the warp and weft, winding supple then settling
